Kavrepalanchowk: A technical team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has commenced an inspection of the BP Highway to assess reconstruction needs following severe damage caused by incessant rainfall from September 27-29.

The 158-km BP Highway, connecting Kathmandu Valley via the Araniko Highway to Bardibas along the East-West Highway, was originally built with JICA's financial support. The inspection, which lasted three days, focused on several damaged sections, according to the Division of Roads, Bhaktapur.

JICA's Decision Expected Soon
Division Chief Suman Yogesh said that JICA is expected to present its findings and decisions regarding reconstruction by the first week of December. "We are fully prepared to start the reconstruction process immediately after receiving JICA's decision," he stated.

Government's Backup Plan
The Nepali government is also preparing to rebuild the critical highway, which serves as an alternative link between Kathmandu and the Terai region. If JICA opts not to undertake the reconstruction, the Division of Roads plans to initiate the project independently within two months. The reconstruction is estimated to cost approximately NPR 7 billion.

Diplomatic Efforts
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli discussed JICA's potential involvement in the BP Highway reconstruction with Japanese Ambassador to Nepal, Kikuta Yutaka, during a meeting on October 16.

The BP Highway, an essential infrastructure for Nepal's connectivity, has been prioritized for restoration to ensure uninterrupted transportation and regional development.
