Kathmandu: The Supreme Court has agreed to review its earlier decision on maintaining a 20-meter standard for riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley. A full bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut and Justices Kumar Chudal and Nityanand Pandey granted the government permission to file a review petition challenging the 2020 ruling.

The initial decision, issued by a joint bench of Justices Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Binod Sharma in December 2020, mandated a 20-meter clearance for riverbanks to ensure environmental protection and sustainable urban planning.

The review comes amid growing debates over the practical and developmental implications of the regulation, with the government seeking to reassess the standards in light of current needs and challenges.

The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the review petition could pave the way for potential amendments to the riverbank regulations, balancing environmental considerations with urban development in the Kathmandu Valley.
