Karnali: Tourism, agriculture, and medicinal herbs have been highlighted as pivotal sectors for economic development in Karnali Province, according to a recent study presented at a stakeholder discussion organized by International IDEA Nepal in Birendranagar.
The report, which focuses on economic growth potential in Karnali, was based on periodic plans, economic surveys, field inspections, and consultations with key stakeholders, said Khagendra Chamling Rai, Province Programme Officer of IDEA Nepal.

Tourism and Infrastructure:
Developing the golden triangle route and enhancing tourism infrastructure were emphasized.
Promoting sustainable agricultural practices in lower Karnali is crucial for economic resilience.
Agriculture and Agro-Industries:
The grading, packaging, and marketing of indigenous crops and agricultural products are seen as necessary steps for economic transformation.
Investments in micro-enterprises and supply chain improvements were recommended to support local farmers and entrepreneurs.
Medicinal Herbs:
Harnessing the region’s rich forest resources for medicinal herb production and export could provide significant economic benefits.
Government's Role
Pramod Bhagat, Programme Officer at IDEA Nepal, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to sustainable agriculture and tourism. He highlighted the provincial government's vision of creating an organic Karnali and ensuring reliable infrastructure to boost growth.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Planning, Mahendra Jung Shahi, stressed the importance of integrated human settlements, road networks, and forest resource management for the region’s development.
Voices from Stakeholders
Kadga BK, Chairman of Chaukune Rural Municipality and a member of the National Rural Municipalities’ Federation, advocated for recognizing and formalizing professions across the province to establish stronger economic linkages.
