Kathmandu: Nepal is amplifying the voices of climate-vulnerable nations, urging the global community for urgent climate finance and support, said Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025 in New Delhi on Thursday.
Addressing the summit, Minister Shahi underscored the disproportionate burden Nepal faces due to climate change, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions.
"Nepal is on the frontline of the climate crisis, facing accelerated glacial melt, erratic monsoons, and increasing natural disasters. Despite our negligible contributions, we are bearing a disproportionate burden," he stated.
Call for Climate Financing and Global Support
Minister Shahi emphasized that mountainous and least developed countries like Nepal need urgent climate financing to mitigate risks. He highlighted a $1 billion economic loss Nepal suffered from climate-induced disasters between 2021 and 2024, warning that water security, energy supplies, and the livelihoods of future generations are at risk.
He also revealed that Nepal is finalizing its third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC-3) and aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
Summit Focus: Accelerating Climate Solutions
The World Sustainable Development Summit 2025 is being held under the theme ‘Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions’. The event aims to strengthen global cooperation and implement collective climate action to address the growing environmental crisis.
