Kathmandu: The Meteorological Forecasting Division has forecasted partly to generally cloudy weather across Nepal this afternoon, attributing the current weather pattern to the influence of western and local winds, along with moisture-laden air from the Bay of Bengal.
Since last night, the Kathmandu Valley has experienced light to moderate rainfall, and the Division has warned of continued light to moderate rain with thunder, lightning, and windstorms in various hilly regions, particularly in Koshi and Lumbini provinces. Light rain or snowfall is also expected in mountainous regions of the country.
Tonight, the hilly areas are expected to remain partly to generally cloudy, with the rest of the country seeing partly cloudy skies. The Division has urged the public to take necessary precautions against possible thunderstorms and wind hazards.
Major Roadways Blocked
In addition to weather disruptions, several key transportation routes have been completely blocked due to persistent rainfall:
- The Narayanghat-Butwal section of the East-West Highway has been closed due to slippery road conditions in the Daunne section, which is currently undergoing road expansion. According to DSP Madhu Nepal, vehicles are struggling to pass, and travelers are advised to take alternative routes. The route is also routinely closed from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM for construction work.
- The Kanti Lokpath, which connects Hetauda to Kathmandu, has also been blocked since early this morning. Continuous rain has caused the Bagmati River to flood, washing away the Bagmati Khola diversion on the Makawanpur-Lalitpur border. DSP Shyam Aryal of the Makawanpur District Police Office confirmed that vehicle movement has been halted since 6:00 AM, and a police team is currently working to clear the route.
Authorities have urged travelers to use alternative routes until road conditions improve and the weather stabilizes.
The combination of severe weather and infrastructure challenges continues to impact daily life and travel across Nepal, with further updates expected as conditions evolve.
