Lalitpur: The Nepali Congress (NC) has urged the government not to promote impunity or engage in politics of revenge. Issuing a statement on Thursday, party Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel said recent decisions by the Ministry of Home Affairs have raised serious concerns about constitutionalism and the rule of law.
Questions Raised Over Home Ministry’s Statement
The statement criticized the Home Ministry’s press release issued on Asoj 29 and a subsequent circular based on it, saying both acts undermined justice and terrorized victims instead of protecting them.
“The policy of granting immunity to criminals found with evidence will never be acceptable to the Nepali people,” the release stated.
Condemnation of Violence During Gen-Z Protest
Referring to the Gen-Z protests of Bhadra 23 and 24, the Congress expressed deep concern over the large-scale violence, arson, looting, and vandalism carried out by criminal elements under the guise of peaceful demonstrations.
“More than 76 people, including security personnel, have lost their lives, and hundreds have been injured. The nation has suffered losses worth trillions of rupees,” the statement noted, calling the incident “unimaginable and tragic.”
Call for Impartial Judicial Probe
The party welcomed the government’s decision to form a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the incidents but stressed that the commission must act impartially.
It warned that the commission should not exceed its jurisdiction or act with bias against political leaders and cadres before the investigation is complete.
Concerns Over Selective Legal Protection
The Congress also questioned the Home Ministry’s statement that appeared to shield individuals accused of serious crimes—including arson, looting, and carrying weapons while impersonating security personnel—from legal action.
“The statement has raised questions about constitutionalism, the rule of law, and accountability,” the party said, urging the government to uphold democratic principles and ensure justice for victims.
