Kathmandu: A total of 122 political parties have been registered with the Election Commission (EC) as of Sunday, according to information shared at a press conference organized by the Commission.
EC spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai informed that since the announcement of the election, seven political parties have been dissolved, while an equal number of new parties have received registration certificates. Of the dissolved parties, one was removed as per a Supreme Court order, while the remaining six were dissolved at the request of their respective leadership. Currently, 28 additional parties are in the process of registration.
Spokesperson Bhattarai stated that although mid-Kartik is the final deadline for registering new parties for participation in the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21, the regular party registration process will continue beyond this date. However, only those parties that receive registration certificates within the prescribed timeframe will be eligible to participate in the House of Representatives and National Assembly elections.
He further informed that voter registration will continue until Mangsir 5. As of Saturday evening, 285,000 people had visited the Commission’s offices to register, while an additional 200,000 citizens had applied for registration using their national identity cards.
