Kathmandu: The Election Commission has allotted election symbols to political parties participating in the proportional representation system for the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for Falgun 21.

The Commission registered the political parties and provided them with election symbols on Friday, according to Assistant Election Officer Yagya Prasad Bhattarai.

Applications and Symbol Allocation
Bhattarai said applications to participate in the proportional representation election were submitted over three days—Mangsir 21, 22 and 23. Although 100 political parties applied, some parties chose to contest under a single, shared election symbol. As a result, a total of 93 election symbols were finalized.

Basis for Symbol Assignment
The Commission stated that serial numbers and election symbols were allocated based on the proportion of votes secured by parties in the 2079 BS House of Representatives elections. For parties without previous electoral performance, symbols were assigned according to their registration order.

Major Election Symbols
According to the Commission, the commonly recognized election symbols include the number one symbol, the sun, five-pointed star, bell, plough, umbrella and loudspeaker.

Other approved symbols include a plain dhakia with base, bicycle, mace, glass, stick, open single eye, scythe, folded hands in greeting, rooster, jug, paw print, well, head, sickle and star, lotus flower, guitar, house and additional traditional symbols.

Shared Election Symbols
The Nepal Sanghiya Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Ekta Party Nepal and Nepal Janajagruti Party have been allotted a common election symbol—the bus.

Similarly, the Rastriya Mukti Party Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party and Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal have received the shared symbol of the chakia (millstone).

Likewise, the Nepal Communist Party (Marxist), Nepal Communist Party (NCP), Shachet Nepali Party and Nagarik Supremacy Party Nepal have been allotted the single symbol of the javelin.
