Kathmandu: The 85th birth anniversary of the former President of the Nepali Congress (NC) and former Prime Minister Sushil Koirala is being observed today with several commemorative programs. Born on 18 Shrawan 1997 BS, Koirala dedicated his life to politics, inspired by Nepal's first democratically elected Prime Minister, BP Koirala.

Koirala is remembered for his leadership during the promulgation of Nepal's Constitution on 20 September 2015, a significant milestone achieved by bringing together all the parties represented in the Constituent Assembly. This accomplishment fulfilled the long-held aspiration of the Nepali people since 2007 BS to draft a constitution through the Constituent Assembly.

Known for his advocacy for truth and simplicity, Koirala played a crucial role in Nepal's political transformation at various times and remained committed to the effective implementation of the Constitution until his passing. He established himself as a straightforward leader, earning respect for his dedication to democracy and the nation.

On the occasion of International Youth Day, various programs are being held across the country in memory of the late leader. Dr. Shashank Koirala, Chairperson of the Sushil Koirala Memorial Foundation and former General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, emphasized that strengthening the democratic system through the successful implementation of the Constitution would be a true tribute to Sushil Koirala.

Established in 2073 BS, the Sushil Koirala Memorial Foundation serves as a think tank in various fields, including education, health, sports, art, culture, human rights, women and children's welfare, and social welfare. The Foundation continues to organize creative programs to honor Koirala's contributions to the nation. Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba serves as the patron of the Foundation.
