Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress (NC) has proposed a comprehensive disaster response mechanism, urging the government to effectively mobilize concerned agencies for ensuring the supply of essential goods, including drinking water, medicine, and fuel, following recent disasters and ahead of upcoming festivals.

In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the NC recommended the establishment of a 'common facilitation mechanism' that would include security agencies, the private sector, local political parties, and organizations. The aim is to streamline post-disaster management, ensuring prompt and coordinated response efforts.

The heavy rains on September 27-28 caused significant damage through landslides, floods, and inundations across more than a dozen districts, leading to the loss of life and property. The NC's 34-point memorandum emphasized immediate action in rescue, relief distribution, and long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

Key recommendations include the installation of bailey bridges, road repairs, and enhanced coordination among the three tiers of government. The party also stressed the importance of curbing black market activity and adulteration through effective market monitoring.

In addition to the recommendations, the NC contributed Rs 5 million to the national disaster fund to support survivors, calling on the private sector and citizens to contribute as well. The party highlighted its history of contributions in times of crisis, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Jajarkot Earthquake, with its lawmakers donating 15 days of their salary to the current relief effort.
