Kathmandu: The 111th birth anniversary of BP Koirala, Nepal's first elected Prime Minister, is being celebrated today with various events across the country. Born on Bhadra 24, 1971 BS, BP Koirala played a pivotal role in Nepal’s political history and the establishment of democracy.

Koirala was a key figure in the formation of the Nepali National Congress in 2003 BS while in exile in India, which contributed to the overthrow of the autocratic Rana regime in 2007 BS. He also participated in India’s independence movement, believing it would aid Nepal’s democratic struggles.

After the successful revolution in 2007 BS, BP Koirala served as Home Minister and later became Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister following the 2015 general elections. During his tenure, he abolished the land tenure system and implemented progressive land reforms.

Despite being overthrown in 2017 BS by the monarchy, Koirala continued his political journey, promoting national unity and reconciliation. He returned to Nepal in 2033 BS, leading to a referendum on Nepal’s political system.

Koirala’s contributions were not limited to politics; he was also a prominent literary figure, with over 18 works, including the popular novels Tin Ghumti, Modi Ain, Sumnima, and Shwet Bhairavi.

To commemorate his legacy, the Sundarijal Prison, where he and other political leaders were imprisoned, now serves as the BP Museum. Various programs are being held across the country, organized by the Nepali Congress, its affiliates, and the BP Museum, to honor Koirala’s life and contributions.
