New York: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asserted that countries responsible for high carbon emissions must compensate nations that are not major contributors to climate change.

Speaking at a Parliamentarians for Fossil Fuel Free event in New York on Saturday, the Prime Minister emphasized that Nepal, with its commitment to zero carbon emission, is playing its part in reducing climate change impact. He argued that developed nations, responsible for significant emissions, should bear the responsibility of compensating communities suffering from the consequences.

PM Oli highlighted the effects of snow melting in the Nepal Himalayas, including Mount Everest, as evidence of the serious impacts of climate change. He further urged developed countries to increase funding for future climate adaptation, aligning with the principles established in the Paris Agreement. "Our future is bright because we are investing for the future," he stated.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Oli met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters, where they discussed various aspects of Nepal-UN relations.

The Prime Minister is leading a Nepali delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly and is accompanied by his spouse Radhika Shakya, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, and other senior officials.
