New York: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, addressing the 'Summit of the Future' session of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), emphasized the shared challenges faced by the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), particularly in combating poverty. Leading the Nepali delegation to the UNGA, PM Oli underscored the importance of industrialization and increasing production as key solutions to poverty alleviation.

PM Oli highlighted the negative impact of greenhouse gas emissions by developed countries on LDCs and urged for greater investment in climate financing. He expressed concern that millions of children in LDCs are deprived of basic necessities such as food and education, calling for global cooperation in addressing these issues.

The Prime Minister criticized the growing inequality, where extreme poverty in LDCs contrasts sharply with the immense wealth accumulation by a minority. He called for immediate international action to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive, emphasizing that the future cannot be built on poverty and injustice.

In his speech, PM Oli stressed that while LDCs contribute just 3.3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, they are disproportionately affected by climate change. He urged for coordinated global efforts to support LDCs in overcoming structural impediments and climate injustice.

The Prime Minister welcomed the 'Pact for the Future' and its focus on a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future, calling for its effective implementation. He reaffirmed the commitment of LDCs to build partnerships and work toward eradicating poverty, hunger, and inequality.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, PM's Principal Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa, were present at the session.
