Kathmandu: The main opposition party, CPN (UML), has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the gold smuggling activities taking place through Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport.

During today's session of the National Assembly, UML lawmaker Devendra Dahal urged the formation of an impartial probe committee, comprising representatives from the government and various political parties, to look into the matter.

Dahal emphasized the urgency of establishing a high-level probe committee, stating that without a fair investigation, such smuggling incidents are likely to persist. He further suggested that if a parliamentary probe committee is formed, it should include representatives from the National Assembly as well.

In addition to seeking a fair investigation, Dahal called for responses from the Home Minister and Finance Minister in the parliament regarding airport security and customs office integrity. He demanded that the respective ministers, along with the airport and customs office officials, be brought under the purview of the investigation.

The UML lawmaker expressed suspicions about the involvement of the airport customs chief and security chief, who conveniently took leave during the time of the gold smuggling incident. Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, Dahal pointed out that a significant amount of gold was smuggled into Nepal through the airport on July 19, indicating that gold smuggling has become a major concern with Nepal becoming a transit point for illegal activities.

Shortly after Dahal presented his views, the UML members protested against the NA Chair Ganesh Prasad Timilsina's handling of the parliament business. In response to the protest, Timilsina removed the schedule for NA members to express their opinions during the zero hour.

In conclusion, the UML party is urging for an objective and transparent investigation into the gold smuggling scandal to uncover any potential irregularities within the system. Their demand for a comprehensive probe aims to address the issue seriously and put an end to the smuggling activities that may be damaging Nepal's reputation.
