Kathmandu: Kathmandu Valley has experienced its highest recorded rainfall to date, according to the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. The record-breaking downpour was measured at 239.7 mm in the last 24 hours at the Tribhuvan International Airport’s Rain Measurement Center, surpassing the previous record of 177 mm set in 2002.

Meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane confirmed that this is the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the Valley since the beginning of rainfall measurement. A detailed report is expected to be released following further study.

Other areas in the Valley also experienced significant rainfall. Lalitpur's Chapagaun recorded 323 mm, compared to its previous record of 200.5 mm in 2002. Jiri, Janakpur, Lumle, Dharan, Dhankuta, and other locations across the country reported heavy rainfall ranging from 100 mm to 194.2 mm.

The unprecedented rainfall has caused widespread damage, with 66 people reported dead and 79 missing due to floods, landslides, and inundation across Nepal. In Kathmandu Valley alone, 34 people have died, and 21 remain missing. However, there has been a slight improvement in weather conditions since Saturday evening.
