Kathmandu:  The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued a warning regarding the potential occurrence of a heat wave during the monsoon season.

While heat waves are more commonly associated with the pre-monsoon period, the NDRRMA emphasized that they could also occur during the monsoon, albeit for shorter durations. It is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and prepared for such atmospheric challenges.

For this year's monsoon, the forecast predicts below-average rainfall, which may result in hotter days compared to the usual weather patterns, as stated by Anil Pokhrel, the CEO of the Authority. Consequently, agricultural production is expected to decline this year due to the prevailing conditions.

Additionally, there remains a possibility of waterborne and communicable diseases spreading during the monsoon season, necessitating caution and attentiveness to personal health. Historical data indicates that illnesses such as jaundice, cholera, diarrhea, respiratory infections, malaria, dengue, influenza, and flu-like illnesses have been prevalent during the rainy season.

Tragically, the country experiences approximately 500 deaths annually during the monsoon due to diseases such as cholera, kala-azar, diarrhea, and snakebites. These statistics underscore the importance of proactive measures and public awareness to mitigate the impact of these health risks.

In light of these warnings, it is crucial for individuals and communities to prioritize their well-being and take appropriate precautions to safeguard against the potential hazards associated with both heat waves and waterborne diseases during the monsoon season.
