Dubai: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' addressed the UN climate change summit, COP-28, in Dubai, highlighting Nepal's severe climate change impacts despite its minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. He emphasized the urgent need for climate justice, asserting that Nepalis face extreme weather events due to global climate injustices.

Expressing disappointment with the recent IPCC report, PM Dahal emphasized the alarming rate of glacier recession in the Himalayas and its detrimental effects on the foundation of human civilization, ecosystems, and biodiversity. He urged global leaders to prioritize saving the mountains and called for collective efforts.

PM Dahal emphasized Nepal's commitment to the Paris Agreement, aiming to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, five years earlier than the global target. He highlighted the challenges faced in implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation plans, citing financial and technological gaps.

As the chair of LDCs (Least Developed Countries), PM Dahal called on developed economies and the international community to provide predictable, adequate, and equitable resources and technologies for vulnerable nations. He urged developed countries to fulfill their commitments, scale up climate finance, and address the shortfall in funding.

Key Demands by PM Dahal:

-Developed countries must raise their ambitions and fulfill commitments urgently.
-Scale up climate finance to address the US $100 billion shortfall.
-Double adaptation finance by 2025 and ensure fair financial arrangements without conditions.
-Demand grants for justice to address the climate crisis.
-Advocate for a predictable, simplified, and adequate loss and damage fund for LDCs and mountainous countries.
-Initiate a dialogue on mountain and climate change.
-PM Dahal concluded by wishing success to the COP-28 Conference, emphasizing the need for solidarity and urgent action to address the global climate crisis.
