Kathmandu: Traders and businesspersons in the New Road area of Kathmandu have staged protests following the Kathmandu Metropolitan City's (KMC) decision to ban vehicle parking in the area.

The entrepreneurs expressed their dissatisfaction by closing the shutters of their shops after the KMC declared the area a 'no parking zone' starting today. Prior to the decision, vehicles were allowed to park in the New Road area.

Kumar Karki, Chairperson of the Nepal National Federation of Entrepreneurs, stated that the KMC's decision to remove parking was made in an unscientific manner and has created additional challenges for businesses already facing difficulties.

Raju Nath Pandey, Chief of KMC Police, explained that the prohibition on vehicle parking in the New Road area aims to facilitate pedestrian movement and reduce crowding. As an alternative, free parking facilities have been arranged at Kathmandu Tower, where 300 four-wheelers and 700 two-wheelers can be accommodated. The KMC conducted a special cleanliness drive in the newly prohibited parking area this morning.
