Kathmandu: An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the districts of Karnali Province in the middle of the night, leaving many residents unprepared as they slept. The quake's impact was felt across Nepal and extended into neighboring India, with Jajarkot and Rukum Paschim districts suffering the most severe consequences.

Official reports from security agencies indicate that the earthquake has claimed 157 lives, and more than 200 people have been injured. Given that search and rescue operations are still ongoing, the number of casualties may continue to rise.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, numerous traditional houses in Jajarkot and Rukum Paschim districts have collapsed, while many others have been rendered uninhabitable. Several villages have been severely damaged, leaving a significant portion of the population homeless. Many families are now living in the open, exposed to the elements.

To address this crisis, search and rescue operations involving more than 1,500 security personnel have been deployed, and humanitarian organizations, including the Nepal Red Cross Society, have intensified their efforts.

Local governments in the affected districts promptly initiated the first phase of rescue operations in a systematic manner. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' played a pivotal role in coordinating and overseeing these relief efforts, issuing guidance to security agencies and stakeholders involved in the operation.

Prime Minister Prachanda, who had been closely monitoring the situation since 1:00 am on Saturday, visited Jajarkot and Rukum Paschim with a medical team and essential supplies. Over the course of an 18-hour day, the Prime Minister reached the earthquake's epicenter early in the morning and assisted with rescue and relief operations.

During his visits to the affected areas, Prime Minister Prachanda assured earthquake survivors of rehabilitation and support, stating that "the government is with them in this time of crisis." Specialized medical teams have been deployed to the affected districts, with arrangements for performing surgeries at the district hospitals.

Local authorities praised Prime Minister Prachanda's efforts, highlighting the support he provided in their efforts to aid earthquake victims. As the recovery and rebuilding process gets underway, it is hoped that the federal government will provide significant support to the affected regions.

Maoist Centre leader Santosh Poudel commended the Prime Minister's prompt response, emphasizing the need for a government announcement of a relief package and immediate preparations for the reconstruction of damaged properties, including heritage sites. To further expedite ongoing relief and rescue operations, the Prime Minister has convened a cabinet meeting for Sunday morning.

This meeting is expected to outline the government's key priorities, including relief for affected individuals, medical treatment for the injured, and resettlement for displaced communities. Given the challenging geography of the Karnali region, the government should also announce a long-term plan for the integrated settlement of affected communities in both districts to expedite recovery efforts and rebuild the local economy.
